SCREENING 1ST TRIMESTER
Down’s Syndrome screening during the first trimester of pregnancy
Maternal Serum screening
The mother’s blood is checked for a combination of 2 normal first trimester proteins : Free-ß subunit of the human chorionic gonadotropin (Free ß-hCG*) and pregnancy associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) make up the standard tests. These tests are independent measurements, and when taken along with the maternal age, can calculate the risk of having a baby with Down’s Syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities.
The 2 immunoassays for the quantitative determination of PAPP-A and Free ß-hCG * in maternal serum are sandwich enzyme immunoassays supplied as separate kits of 96 tests. The procedure of the both assays is standardized so that they can be easily performed simultaneously.
*The Free-ßhCG kit has not received CE mark for Down’s syndrome screening. This assay is not available for Down’s Syndrome screening in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Spain, France, The United Kingdom, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxemburg, The Netherlands, Sweden, Japan, Australia and the United States of America.
